Jeep History
Jeep started as a nickname when GI's in World War II called their Willys GP (General Purpose) vehicles "Jeeps," a name that may also have been borrowed from the character Eugene the Jeep in the Popeye comics of the time. The Jeep earned a reputation for reliability verging on indestructibility that would follow it through the war, and would result in the originals being highly sought after as surplus after the war. Jeep would pass from Willys to AMC to Chrysler, but its sterling reputation remains, in no small part because they're still built to the same high standards.
